Cat Lady’s New Title

Cat Lady life has been expanding with new adventures lately. My book has brought about some rewarding speaking engagements. My passion for music lead to a friendship that blossomed into romance and a once-a-month radio show co-hosting gig! Every second Sunday of the month from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, I share music and banter over the airwaves with DJ John Ford on KXFM’s radio show, AM Radio (AM for Americana Music). Tune your dial to 104.7 if you’re local, listen online or tell Alexa to play KXFM 104.7.

On November 20th, we celebrated Samantha Jo’s fifth birthday, which translates to 36 human years. She was born into the Alpha Generation, yet the identifier is based on the Greek alphabet, not domineering and assertive characteristics. Nevertheless—she’s still Queen Sassy Pants.

And while commercialism has pushed Christmas upon us in November, I’m living in the moment and embracing autumn and the Thanksgiving holiday season. I adore my orange twinkle lights in the yard and festive fall décor in the cottage, and Samantha fits right in with the orange accents.

Although, last week I had to put my inner Grinch aside for The Blue Bell Foundation for Cats. It’s that time of year again for The Sawdust Festival’s Winter Fantasy. Blue Bell, among several nonprofits, was selected to decorate a Christmas tree in Santa’s Village at The Winter Fantasy. I was on the Christmas tree decorating committee with Blue Bell staff, Jenna and Leesa, and volunteer Terri.

In preparation for the Winter Fantasy opening last Friday, we strategically hung our very own handcrafted ornaments, carefully curating our “Santa Claws” themed Christmas tree.

Our committee attended the tree lighting ceremony along with spouses, and with me, John, my new beau. As John and I took in the bustling scene and marveled at the adorable Blue Bell tree, a boy about five years old took an ornament off the tree and began stuffing it into the tiny stocking hung behind it. The ornament was a round clear disc with a photo of a Blue Bell cat displayed from inside, and holiday embellishments on the exterior, including a name tag for the kitty. His mother stood by and watched as her kid vandalized our ornament—that is, until I stepped in.

I took the ornament out of his hand and firmly told him that we worked hard on decorating the tree and making the ornaments, and they were not to be touched. His mother looked at me, speechless, then quickly ushered her kid away from the tree. After the tree lighting ceremony, while still gathered around our Christmas tree, I told the group about the little ornament vandal. Within moments of our collective expression of irritation, a middle-aged woman approached the tree and attempted to rearrange the kitty reindeers pulling Santa Claws’s sleigh.

I marched over to her and lectured about how hard we worked on getting the placement just right and (once again) the ornaments are not to be touched! Despite dealing with ill-mannered festivalgoers, it was a glorious evening. Blue Bell even won the Cutest Tree Award.

We were about to call it a night when teenage boys came tearing through the grounds and grabbed one of the presents under our tree and started to run off with it. John and I told him to put the present back. The kid looked at me and snidely said that his name was on it. “PUT. THE PRESENT. BACK!” I yelled.

He begrudgingly obeyed then ran off.

And that’s when I was awarded the title, Tree Police. You got that right. Nobody messes with the Blue Bell tree!

2022 Reflections and Highlights

The year 2022 marked a true new beginning for me, with healing becoming more steady and evident. I gained back all my weight (lost during my bout with cancer), more stamina and strength, and I’ve also gained the courage to put into play the beginnings of a more meaningful life. Taking risks in the name of happiness and growth are priority, from signing a book-publishing contract to giving romance a chance—life has become more enriched with choices that foster purpose and bliss.

And so is staying healthy. I still pace myself and rest is a must, like our cats who nap, a natural part of their daily recovery process, I, like Samantha Jo, still take naps as needed and get to bed as early as possible (by 9:30 p.m. is best) on a regular basis. Well…except for New Year’s Eve, when I actually made it past midnight.

I’m making daily conscious efforts to detach from stress and embrace happiness. Often times, joyful moments happen around us all the time. We just have to see them.

Seeing Samantha thriving in her own sense of joy and in her recovery from chronic idiopathic cystitis triggers such contentedness and is one of life’s treasures for me. And to multiply the joy she generates is watching her interact with her new Cat Daddy. They lavish each other with unabashed adoration.

They’re at it again…

I am also purposefully creating happiness by instigating and saying yes to opportunities that tug at my soul’s calling. Not to say I haven’t done this in the past…it all just lost sight from me for so long. Sometimes life’s daily grind takes over and our dreams get lost in the shuffle.

In 2008 I started writing a story that I thought would make a wonderful children’s book. Long at last, Two Cats, a Mermaid and the Disappearing Moon will launch sometime in spring of 2023! You’ll recognize the characters, Topper, Lexington and Bella as they take center stage in this story about the mystery and magic of Mother Nature.

This music-loving cat lady co-hosted a radio show, which was a childhood dream-come-true and truly, a highlight of the year and of my life thus far. Thank you, again, KX FM radio host Steve Reid!

My inner cowgirl got to ride again! It had been since 2017 that I’d rode a horse. Cowboy hats off to my beau, who arranged a trail ride to celebrate a momentous birthday I had in June.

Year 2022 ended with glorious Christmas holiday, being able to spend time with many family members for the first time in years. And for those I missed…I hope to see you in 2023. And the year’s grand finale was a New Year’s Eve celebration in the cozy cottage with Cat Daddy and Samantha Jo; a little wine, homemade marinara over spaghetti, some lively 70s funk/soul music, lots of dancing, a game of Charades, and lots of laughter.

Happy New Year and Happy Mew Year to all!

A Catnip Christmas Eve

‘Twas the eve before Christmas and the cottage was stirring,
With the muffled sounds of Samantha Jo purring.

Cat Lady was busy making cookies and tea,
When Samantha meowed, “Any catnip for me?”

The fluffy floof sniffed as she searched all around,
For the aromatic herb that made her act like a clown.

Cat Lady let out a laugh as she scooped-up her cat,
To guide her to where the cat-weed was at.

But Queen Sassy Pants wriggled and jumped to the floor,
And dashed across the hardwood to where she spied,
A small wood box containing what she’d been denied.

The scent of the leaves she inhaled with glee,
She wriggled and pranced and strutted her stuff,
Cat Lady cracked-up and said, “I think you’ve had enough!”

With one last whiff of the weed and a grand leaping motion,
Samantha sprinted through space like she’d swigged a magic potion.

Now the catnip spell waned as the cookies were eaten,
But the magic remained, as that can’t be beaten.

I wish everyone a Happy Christmas and Joyous New Year!

I’m grateful for your continued readership, support, and for being there for me throughout my cancer journey and now, my road to recovery.

XOXO
