Ghost Cats and the Phantom Mouse

In the summer of 2018, when I met my realtor at the circa 1922 cottage I was considering for my next home, despite its run-down condition, I was struck by its enchanted quality. It was alive with positive vibes. I felt welcomed by an unseen greeting committee. I signed the lease, excited about a new beginning living in a vintage cottage.

Enchanted Cottage shortly after moving in.

After moving in with Bobcat and Lexington, often, while sitting on the sofa at night reading, I would look over my shoulder thinking I saw one of the cats sauntering by; yet, seconds later would glance into the bedroom to see both cats sound asleep.

One late afternoon I was sitting at my desk and saw movement from my peripheral vision coming from the bookcase next to the French doors. I turned to see a mouse scurrying from the bookcase to underneath the hutch. It was quick and almost looked like a shadow, but well defined. I thought I imagined it when Bobcat came bolting from the bedroom making a beeline for the hutch. He was trying to get under it, going from one side to the next, fervently meowing. I opened the front door in an attempt to get the mouse out of the house. As I tried to coax my enthusiastic cat away from the hutch so the mouse could run outside—Bobcat came out from the side of the hutch and nonchalantly sashayed back into the bedroom. And the mouse was nowhere to be found.

Bobcat sees a ghost mouse!

About a year ago I was awoken at 2:00 a.m. by the sound of labored breathing coming from the living room. I turned on the bedside table lamp, cautiously got up and went into the direction of the sound with Samantha by my side. The sound shifted from the entryway to the sofa. Samantha poked her head under the sofa as if trying to figure out where it was coming from. I walked around the sofa then went back to the entryway with Samantha shadowing me.  I concluded that the sound was a suffering animal under the house. I said a prayer for it then went back to bed. I awoke again, thinking it was morning because light was filtering from the living room into my bedroom, yet it was 4:00 a.m. Perplexed, I went into the living room to find a set of lights had been turned on—lights that I never use because they are too bright. I got goose bumps and wondered if the noise we heard was actually something otherworldly.

Mama, what is that creepy noise?

Later that morning, I looked under the house to find no animal. Even if it had gotten out alive, the crawl space where it would have been was not in the same location of the sound, which emanated from the location of the foundation. I started to believe that the enchanted cottage was a refuge for lost souls.

Lately, the cottage has been devoid of phantom mice and ghostly cats. And I’ve not awoken to spooky sounds and lights with a mind of their own.

Maybe the spirits of Bobcat and Lexington are keeping the spooks away.

Happy Halloween Everyone!

Mama, you aren’t seriously going to wear this hat?

Hippie Cat, Horned Cat

“If you’re going to San Francisco / Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair…”

Lyrics from “San Francisco” by Scott McKenzie

Oh the decisions we must make during the Halloween season.  What to be…a faerie, cat lady, a hippie or a devil?  Lucky for me who loves to dress in costume, I got to be my top two choices:  a faerie and a cat lady.  Lexington and Bobcat watched with intrigue as I crafted a flower faerie costume that I wore to one of the most sensational soirees I’ve ever attended.  The theme was “Samhain” the ancient Celtic celebration of harvest and those who’ve passed (which eventually became Halloween as we know it today).  The gathering of witches, wizards, Vikings, elves and faeries was held in a rustic outdoor canyon setting in Laguna Beach.  I felt as though I’d been transported back to the days of Lords and Ladies, to a time when people believed in magic.

On Halloween day, I transformed myself into my alter ego, Cat Lady and had fun at the office acting the part by threatening co-workers with my claws.

Yet, the hippie and devil costume ideas would be not be dismissed.  After all, I had Lexington and Bobcat who would of course partake the dress-up-in-costume Halloween ritual. At first Bobcat resisted.  He just wanted to hang out with his new friends who took-up residence on the sofa during the month of October.

Lexington, although not eager to become a flower child, agreed to participate in the costume ritual, and in his tie-dye and flowers, looked like he could have been seen at Haight-Ashbury during the Summer of Love.

Bobcat, not wanting to be left out and knowing that he was at times, a little devil without the horns, thought it might be fun, for a moment, to be a devil with horns.

The Blue Bell Foundation for Cats had a Halloween party for the volunteers—or was it really for the cats?

But a month before Halloween, cats and dogs were already in costume at the 23rd Annual Pet Parade & Chili Cook-Off, a fundraiser established by the Laguna Board of Realtors Charitable Assistance Fund.  Blue Bell was selected as one of the beneficiaries and had a booth at the event to promote its purpose, which I ran with two other volunteers.  This dog-centric event was graced with the presence of two cat participants, Cody, a Blue Bell resident and Rolo, cat companion of Elizabeth and Cole who adopted him while at CatCon this summer.  Cody handled being in a crowd with cautious curiosity.  Rolo, the epitome of a cool cat thrived among the event-goers.  The fact that he was completely at ease wearing a cowboy costume also spoke volumes to his laid-back purr-sonality. Both cats entered the contest, and Cody, festive in a sport t-shirt thrilled us all by winning first place for most gorgeous senior.

Rolo didn’t place in the contest, but he got plenty of adoration and as far as I’m concerned, a cat that wears cowboy boots is a winner despite the judges’ lack of sensibilities.

And despite the initial “rolling of the eyes” by my two felines when I suggested they get costumed-up with me, they were secretly into it…

Ghost Stories–Now and Then

Halloween always takes me back to childhood—to growing up in that cozy pink house with a “u” shaped driveway on Whitcomb Street in Glendora, California. Memories of a more imaginative time take hold of my mind: telling ghost stories with girlfriends in the orange grove at the end of our block…daring each other to trick-or-treat at the mysterious mansion known as the Tin Palace.

And every Halloween there was that bungalow on Leadora Street that transformed into a terrifying haunted house. My brother, Jeff and I would stand by the curb, paralyzed by the clanking chain and sinister laughing sound effects, trying to muster the courage to approach the front door, while ghoulish figures ushered in the brave trick-or-treaters.

Halloween 1960s

Fast-forward to last night, a Halloween themed “girls-night-in” at my place. As we sat around the dinning room table, devouring roasted salmon, sipping wine and gabbing, conversation went from girl-talk to ghost stories.

Jasmine shared about witnessing the spirit of her grandfather and Cindy told us about mysterious orbs in photos she took on her travels to the pyramids of Egypt.

“My ghost is a cat,” I said.

“I’ve seen the filmy shape of a cat wandering the hallway by my bedroom.   And last week I was wide awake in the middle of the night, so I sat up, turned on the bedside lamp so I could do some reading.   All three cats were lined up next to each other sleeping at the foot of the bed.  I reached for my book on the dresser when movement on the floor caught the corner of my eye. I looked down and saw a cat saunter along the side of my bed then abruptly disappear. I looked at the foot of the bed again for a quick head count and all three cats were still there sound asleep!”

We contemplated “who” I might have seen. Was the phantom cat the spirit of one of my beloved kitty angels, Punkie, Frankie or Bella?

Over dessert our spooky stories continued. “Lori, I know we’ve heard it before, but tell us, again, about your haunted apartment,” I eagerly requested. All eyes were fixated on Lori as we listened to her tale: One night upon returning home from the Marine Room, as Lori walked up the narrow indoor stairwell leading to her studio apartment in a circa 1930s apartment building, she saw a family at the top of the stairs on the second story landing. The man, woman and little girl were dressed in “Little House on the Prairie clothes,” as Lori described, and looked somewhat transparent. They stood motionless, staring down at her, smiling.  Another tenant and his girlfriend who were friends of Lori also saw the ghost family—right in his apartment.

“Wow, that’s crazy!” we all marveled.

I felt like a kid in the orange grove again.

I thought to myself, why is it that my ghosts are cats? I’ve been to Lori’s several times and have never seen the ghost family. I guess it figures that a cat lady can only tune-in to the spirits of dearly departed felines rather than the early settlers of Laguna Beach.
