Bella Brings Unexpected Love

Four years ago, I lost one of my true loves—the love of a furry and tailed kind.   I suppose that all my cats are, and have been true loves, but like certain people, Bella touched me on a soul mate kind of level.Pretty Bella 2

Bella had only been in my life for three years, far from the many years I was expecting to share with her. Over those three years, Bella had worked her way deep into my heart as she opened her guarded soul to me. I adopted her from New Beginnings for Animals and was her third home. When I met her at the PetSmart adoption center, she cautiously came out of her cage and carefully looked up at me.  I knelt down to meet her face to face.  She sniffed my forehead, cheeks and nose, stepped back and sized me up.  The volunteer said that Bella had been there for months, yet never showed interest in anyone, gently urging me to consider this eight year old Persian mix. I had intended to adopt a kitten, but told the volunteer that I would think about Bella. Over the following days, not only did I think about Bella, I could not get her out of my mind. My desire for a kitten was overshadowed by my instant connection with Bella. It seemed that she’d been patiently waiting for me. A week following our introduction, I returned to the adoption center. Bella greeted me again, demonstrated her craze for catnip and I promptly signed adoption papers. This stoic beauty was coming home with me.

Our initial connection grew into a strongly bonded relationship—bonded with love, trust and a lot of humor. I got such a kick out of her. Bella was a dancer trapped in a cat’s body and I was audience to her burlesque routines. Miss Bella would sashay across the hardwood floor, just beyond the coffee table, in front of the T.V. then stop mid strut as if remembering something important, which lead to a dismissive glance over her shoulder before she strutted off the “stage.”   She appeared to be on her tippy toes, and her rubinesque behind swayed purposefully while her fluffy tail would oscillate in sync with her sassy struts. At the end of each act she ended-up on my lap loudly purring and proudly looking up at me with her big round orange eyes. I could see and feel Bella’s contentment—that sense of finally belonging; finally being loved and adored.

I still smile when I think about the three years we had together. And four years later, tears still fall when I think of our last day together—Bella snuggling with me, Topper and Lex on my bed for several surreal hours before the vet arrived.IMG_0025

At one point she sat up, stretched and nonchalantly licked her paw, then licked a drop of chamomile tea from my fingertip as if she were perfectly fine. Other than labored breathing and murky eyes she still looked healthy and beautiful. But the cancer had gotten the best of her, and she would have passed on her own within days. I couldn’t bear to see her suffer.

Dr. Sultzer arrived at 2:30 p.m. on April 30, 2012 to help Bella cross over to the Rainbow Bridge. I held her as she peacefully passed with Topper and Lex by her side.

From Cat Tales to Fish Tails

IMG_1924Between meeting deadlines, taxes, PetExpo and Literary Orange, I was thrilled to finally have a weekend to enjoy relaxation with the cat crew and some beach time.  After my volunteer shift at Blue Bell on Friday, I curled up with Lex and Topper and opened the first issue of Catster magazine, formerly Cat Fancy and devoured its content from the editor’s note to the last feature.

DSCN2457It’s fresh, full of informative and entertaining columns, articles, and continuous pages of cute cat pics—a must for all cat enthusiasts. My evening ended with a cup of catnip tea then off to dreamland. Seriously, I drink catnip tea. It is very calming and an effective remedy for insomnia. My cats teach me so much!

I awoke Saturday morning feeling rested and relieved to have a day with no itinerary. I leisurely sipped my coffee with the kitties at my side and while reading the local newspaper learned that the Fifth Annual Kelp Festival was being held down on Main Beach that day. I might be a canyon dwelling cat lady, but I also love the ocean and am fascinated with marine life. I had wanted to go to the Kelp Festival for the last couple of years, but it conflicted with working the Blue Bell booth at PetExpo. At last, I was able to partake in celebrating the restoration of Laguna Beach’s kelp forests, a vital marine ecosystem.

Although, it was actually a siren’s call that lured me to the Kelp Festival.

As we wound our way through the tables of vendors, past the stage where a crowd was swaying to the beat of live music, and through a decorative handcrafted kelp bed, Gary said, “There she is!” I caught a glimpse of the turquoise and golden fish tail and forged my way past kids, dogs, and strollers, and was finally face to face with a live mermaid. IMG_1985“Hi! I’m Mermaid Linden!” She cheerfully introduced herself while lounging on her seashell throne and casually snacking on a slice of pizza. I would have expected seaweed salad, but the starfish adorning her hair and very intricately detailed fish tail made the myth appear believable—despite the pizza.   She gave Daryl Hannah’s mermaid in the movie Splash some serious competition. IMG_1983 I felt like I was 10 again. Meeting a mermaid brought out my inner kitten.

I wonder if she has a pet catfish…

About Cats and Fish: Domestic cats may like fish and are drawn to its smell, but wild cats don’t eat fish (with the rare exception of the “fishing cat”), nor did our pet cat’s ancestor the African wildcat. Cats, being obligate carnivores by nature don’t hunt fish unless opportunity presents itself (fishermen may want to keep an eye on their catches if a hungry stray wanders by). According to Karen Becker, DMV of healthypets.com, “fish, as it turns out, is one of the most highly allergenic foods for felines. Allergies cause systemic inflammation. Cats that eat allergenic foods over and over can end up with lung inflammation that can also lead to asthma.” Further, fish these days is loaded with mercury and many veterinarian resources recommend being careful about the amount and type of fish you feed kitty—for instance lay off the tuna, but occasional wild-caught salmon or sardines packed in water offer a great source of omega-3.

About the Myth: Professional “Mermaid Linden” makes the myth an almost reality, being a professional underwater model, videographer and avid diver, and can hold her breath for 5 minutes! Through her transformation into a mermaid she inspires and educates children about ocean conservation. Visit www.mermaidsinmotion.com for more about Linden.

Catnip & Cabernet

My cats offer companionship in so many ways—cuddling, engaging conversation (I’m not 100 percent fluent in catspeak, but still get what their saying) and just Lex and the TV 035hanging-out together. They watch TV with me, are intrigued with what I’m reading, provide me with their undivided attention when I’m working (why is that?), but sometimes the most fun I have with my cats is during “happy hour.”

No—I don’t take them to the Marine Room Tavern. We do our own homespun version:  I pour myself a glass of cabernet (or chardonnay depending on the season), break out the Cosmic Catnip and watch Topper and Lexington go wild. The party starts after the cats curiously sniff then taste the catnip that I’ve sprinkled onto a small rug. After they take in the aroma and flavor, Lex, lying on his belly, Wine Tastingrubs the sides of his face into it; back and forth in between his widely sprawled front legs. Topper flops down and wriggles and rolls in it. Then the buzz really kicks in—the cats start bolting around the living room, heads darting back and forth with their eyes big and crazed, bolting from sofa to the cozy chair and back down to the cat weed, which is now all over the hardwood floor. I entice their antics with catnip toys, which they bat around like hockey pucks. Lex clenches the catnip mouse in his jaws and tosses it up into the air. It lands, he whacks at it with his big paw, and the hockey game ensues.
