Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat, I Love You…

Learning to cope with a diabetic cat, preparing for a Blue Bell Foundation fundraiser, and all the while working has made the past few weeks a blur, and here Valentine’s Day is rapidly approaching. I’ve barely had time to think about it, although have managed to plan an eventful day with my guy. We are ditching the hype and commercialism and just doing things we enjoy—a hike in the morning, a bottle of wine on the beach at sunset, and dinner at home in the evening.

Cupid’s arrow was meant for lovers, but I think Valentine’s Day can also be a time to celebrate the love we have with our animals—cat or dog, bunny, llama, parrot, you name whatever fuzzy, feathered creature has gotten you all goo-goo eyed and silly.

It’s a love that is as valid as the love we experience with another human. So while this cat lady won’t be doing anything crazy like sending Topper and Lexington heart-shaped cards and red roses, I will be content to be spending a Valentine’s evening with my cats, all snuggled up on the sofa and appreciating the joy, comfort and companionship they bring.

Sleepy Boys

And while I have a boyfriend in my life now, there were plenty of times when I didn’t; yet I never felt unloved or alone because I always shared my life with loving felines. I was never home alone and lacking company. I know it’s not exactly the same as romantic love, but it’s just as deep.

Go put on a Tom Jones CD, kiss your beloved animal companion and your special someone and have a very Happy Valentine’s Day!
